Forest Department officials found a leopard cat dead near the fire station in Mussoorie today. They sent the carcass for a post-mortem.
The forest officials believe that the animal could have died after it was run over by a vehicle in early dusk hours today. Local residents thought it to be a leopard cub when they spotted it around10.30 am. The Forest Department team headed by Inspector Balbir Singh Rawat reached the spot and confirmed that it was not a leopard but a leopard cat.
Mussoorie DFO Saket Badola said a team was sent to the place and it found that it was a leopard cat, a male of around 3 years old.
This is the third death of a leopard cat in the past two years while more than three leopard cats had died in the past five years. Meanwhile, residents, who are in panic after leopards were sighted in the town recently, said they were fearful to see the leopard cat that looks similar to a leopard.
