The Centre has stepped in for the purchase of cotton at the minimum support price (MSP) in the state. This was revealed during a meeting of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal with Union Textile Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar here today.
A Punjab government spokesperson said during the meeting, Gangwar directed the Cotton Corporation of India (CC)) Chairman-cum-Managing Director, BK Mishra, to visit Chandigarh tomorrow to hold discussions with the state’s officers to work out the modalities for the purchase of cotton without any further delay.
During the discussions with Gangwar, Badal sought his intervention on the matter.
In response to Badal’s request for relaxation in the norms for cotton procurement in the wake of large-scale damage to the crops due to recent pest attack in the Malwa region of the state, Gangwar asked him to send a proposal regarding it.
The Union Minister assured of sympathetic consideration to the proposal.
Gangawar assured Badal of ministry’s positive response with regard to opening a skill development centre in textile sector in the state.
