To check building violations, the Chandigarh Hosing Board (CHB) is palnning to adopt the shear wall technology in its future housing schemes. With this, there will be little or no scope for making any alteration or addition in houses at later stages.
Sources said the CHB is planning to adopt the technology for its new 200-flat project in Sector 51. As per the sources, the technology will make the building earthquake-resistant.
Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings often have vertical plate-like RC walls called shear walls in addition to slabs, beams and columns. These walls generally start at the foundation level and are continuous throughout the building height. Shear walls are usually provided along both length and width of buildings.
Sources said the need for the technology was felt after the allottees made large-scale violations in their houses over the period of time. Though the board has already relaxed norms, considering these violations as need-based changes, the problem persists. The CHB has constructed more than 60,000 houses in the past.
