City’s heritage auctioned in US

Chandigarh, September 11

The heritage furniture of Chandigarh was once again sold in the US. This time, the auction was held at the Oak Park, IL, US, on Saturday by Treadway Toomey Auction House. All eight lots of Chandigarh items were auctioned for 36,900 USD (approximately Rs 25 lakh).

The furniture was created by world renowned Architect Mon Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret.

Ajay Jagga, a social activist, has written a letter to Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister for Tourism, to initiate an inquiry to find out as to why heritage items were sold as junk or scrap, causing huge loss to the government.
