The Bakshi Nagar police today quizzed the management and teachers of a private school after a Class XI commerce student of the institution committed suicide at his residence in the Rajpura area of the city last evening.
Situation, however, remained tense in the area as the family members, relatives and residents assembled outside Dewan Devi Higher Secondary School, Rajpura, and demanded immediate arrest of the school principal, accusing him and the management of subjecting the deceased to corporal punishment and punishing him in front of all students.
Aman Sharma, 16, a Class XI student of Dewan Devi Higher Secondary School, Rajpura, allegedly committed suicide last evening and his body was found hanging at his residence. The police shifted the body to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where the autopsy was conducted this morning.
The family members and relatives, however, assembled outside the school and blamed the management for subjecting the student to corporal punishment. They alleged that the classmates of Aman Sharma told them that he was given corporal punishment in front of all students and he was under immense stress. They demanded immediate arrest of the principal for allegedly harassing Aman.
“Immediately after reaching home, Aman straightway went to his room. Later, his family members did not find him in his room and started searching for him in the locality. Till late evening, they failed to locate him, but found him hanging in the store of the house when one of the family members went to the store,” said Aman’s relative.
The police, however, said it was premature to comment on the reasons that forced the student to take the extreme step. “We have called the principal and other staff members to the police station for questioning and investigation has been started in the case,” the police said, adding that it was yet to be ascertained whether the deceased was given corporal punishment as nothing was recorded in the CCTVs installed inside the school.
