CM remembers martyr Kesari Chand in Doon

Chief Minister Harish Rawat has hailed the sacrifice made by martyr Kesari Chand during the freedom movement. Rawat attended the birth anniversary celebrations of the martyr at the Pavillion Ground here today.
Rawat said Kesari Chand gave the supreme sacrifice for the country’s independence at the age of mere 24. He announced a scholarship in the memory of Kesari Chand.
The Chief Minister also released a CD of songs sung by Kusum Negi in the memory of the martyr.
Uttarakhand Home Minister Pritam Singh, Munna Singh Rana and Geeta Ram Gaur were also present.
Former MLA Ranjeet Singh Verma has said people should follow in the footprints of freedom fighters of the country. He said it was the duty of residents to contribute for the overall development of the state. He expressed his views at a ceremony to pay tributes to martyr Dal Bahadur Thapa and Kesari Chand, organised by the Uttarakhand Rajya Nepali Bhasha Samiti here yesterday.
Verma said Thapa had played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement. He said Thapa was very active soldier in Azad Hind Fauz. Thapa had proved his worth in many battles fought to liberate India, he said. Ajay Chettri, Vishnu Prasad, Hoshiyar Singh Thapa and Reeta Thapa were present.
At another ceremony, organised by the Veer Shaheed Kesari Chander Yuva Samiti, members urged people to eradicate social evils from society. Chander laid down his life for the country, organisers said. A cultural evening and kabaddi competition was also organised on the occasion.
Mayor Vinod Chamoli also paid floral tributes by garlanding the statue of Shaheed Kesari Chand at Gandhi Park.
