A two-day free ENT camp, organised by the Vivekananda Kendra, concluded yesterday and two free cochlear implant surgeries were successfully conducted on two deaf and dumb children under 5 years of age.
The kendra had selected 18 children from this hill state for cochlear implant surgery to be performed by Dr Sanjay Sachdeva and two of them were operated upon today.
Dr Sanjay Sachdeva, Director, ENT, Head and Neck surgery, Max Group of Hospitals, said here today after he performed two free cochlear implant surgeries on the second day of the camp that children born with congenital hearing loss face difficulties in communication and in learning speech with the result they have gross lack of communication skills and become a burden on the society and such children could be helped by implanting surgically cochlear implant.
He said through the kendra earlier six free cochlear implants were implanted with successful results. He said today Aditya (4) from Sakot village and Anmol (4) from Bala Ji Vihar here were operated upon for cochlear implant and cochlear implant costing Rs 5.38 lakh were given free to the patients. He said every month two children would undergo such free surgeries.
He said the first day of the camp started at Gurkhari on the outskirts of this town yesterday and nearly 100 patients were examined and 29 audiometric tests conducted free of cost.
