The Welfare Association, MIG-I Houses, Sector 40C, Chandigarh, and theConsumer Association, Chandigarh, organisedan “awareness andutilisation of consumer rights programme” in Sector 40C here.

While addressing the gathering, RK Kaplash, Chairman, Consumer Association, Chandigarh, said their organisation had settled more than 10,000 consumer disputes since its inception.

ML Vohra, secretary of the association, discussed the features of the Consumer Protection Act- 1986, which include right to be protected against the marketing of goods that are hazardous to life and property.

SK Khosla, General Secretary of the Welfare Association, MIG-I Houses, said the Consumer Protection Act-1986 had to pass through various hurdles and ultimately the Supreme Court had to intervene to get it implemented in August 1991 after passing of five years.

KS Nana, General Secretary, Punjab Pensioners Welfare Association, said maximum retail price (MRP), which is the root-cause of many ills for consumers, needs to be fixed in accordance with some fixed parameters, as at present there is no yardstick due to which manufacturers are exploiting the consumers.

JM Sharda, Chief Patron, said such programmes needed to be organised frequently.
