Chandigarh: In an embarrassment for the UT police, an Inspector posted a nude picture of a model on the WhatsApp group of the UT police on Monday evening. The group, named Police Control Room, has all officers, including the UT DGP, DIG, SSP, SP, DSPs and inspectors as members. The officers were shocked to see the picture on the WhatsApp group that also has women officers. Sources said the incident left the officers fuming. TNS

920 boxes of liquor seized from truck near Hallo Majra

Chandigarh: A team of the Chandigarh police seized 920 boxes of liquor loaded in a truck near Hallo Majra. While the driver managed to flee from the spot, the cleaner,  Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Phase I, Ram Darbar, was arrested. The police claimed that the accused could not produce any licence or permit. The seizure from the truck included 200 boxes of Imperial Blue Superior Grain Whisky and 712 boxes of MC Dowells No. 1. Inspector Jaswinder Kaur, SHO, Sector 31, said a case had been registered under the Excise Act. The truck has been impounded by the police. TNS

Traffic policeman caught taking bribe on camera

Chandigarh: A traffic policeman was caught on camera while allegedly taking a bribe from a violator in Sector 43 here on Monday evening.  Sources said Sachin, a shopkeeper at the Sector 22 market, was coming from Kharar in a Swift car when he was stopped by an interceptor vehicle of the traffic police for driving while talking on the mobile phone. The cop in the interceptor told Sachin that he would be challaned for Rs 2,500 for the traffic rule violation. He told the violator that the challan could, however, be settled at the spot. Sachin paid Rs 500 to him. However, the entire incident was captured on the mobile phone by Sachin’s brother, who was also sitting in the car. The video shows the traffic cop taking the bribe and then returning to the interceptor (CH 01 GA 6028). Senior police officials said the matter would be investigated on receiving a complaint. TNS

Auction: No bidders for 14 liquor vends in city

Chandigarh: The Excise and Taxation Department has once again failed to find bidders for 14 liquor vends in the city. The department has received bids only for 10 out of the 24 vends, which were left during the first auction. April 10 was the last date for submission of bids. The Administration had advertised 77 licensing units to be allotted for the year 2017-18. Out of these, 53 were auctioned recently while 24 vends were left out for want of bidders. An officer of the department said the tenders for the 10 vends would be opened on Tuesday. TNS

Now, community centres can serve liquor 

Chandigarh: The UT Excise and Taxation Department has allowed serving of liquor at community centres during functions. The hosts will be charged Rs 2,500 for a licence to serve liquor per function. Serving liquor has remained banned in community centres for the past three years due to a standoff between the Municipal Corporation and the Excise Department over the annual fees. The MC wanted to pay fee on function basis instead of the flat annual fee. TNS

F&CC okays open-air gyms for three sectors

Chandigarh: The Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) of the Municipal Corporation on Monday approved the agenda item for open-air gyms in Sectors 18, 19 and 21. All these three sectors fall under Mayor Asha Jaswal's ward. The F&CC also okayed purchase of six tractors at an estimated cost of Rs 33.86 lakhs for use in the road wing of the civic body. The committee also decided to fill the posts of draughtsman and data entry operator in the architecture wing by outsourcing. The committee also approved installation of a tubewell in EWS Housing Complex at Vikas Nagar in the place of low-discharge tubewell there. The agenda item for installation of sewerage system in Sector 24C was also passed by the committee. TNS

Mohali to get skill development centre under PM's scheme

Mohali: A skill development centre under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) will come up in this town. The Mohali Industry Association (MIA) would run the centre at its new building, said Sanjeev Vashisht of the association after a meeting with Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy. The MIA delegation, including Anurag Aggarwal, chairman, government liaison, discussed programmes being run by the ministry for imparting training to industrial workers under the PMKVY. “After the discussion, the minister asked us to go ahead and open the centre," said Aggarwal. Chemists end strike, to help police check drug menace

Ropar: The Ropar District Chemists’ Association called off its strike after a meeting with Ropar SSP Nilambari Jagdale Vijay here on Monday. The SSP assured that they would not face any harassment in future. Notably, all chemists in the district had struck work in protest against the checking of a chemist shop by the police at Chamkaur Sahib on Saturday. Following the meeting, the general secretary of the association, Surinder Duggal, said the SSP had assured that they would not visit chemist shops on their own as only officials of the Drugs Controller Department were competent to do so. “The association has formed a six-member committee to coordinate with the police and the district administration whenever there was  a complaint against a chemist,” he added. “The association will help the police and district administration to keep a check on the drug menace,” he said. Woman in mid-30s jumps before train, dies 

Dera Bassi: A woman committed suicide by jumping before a train on the Ambala-Kalka railway track here on Monday. As per Government Railway Police (GRP) sources, the woman is yet to be identified. Eyewitnesses said the woman, who seemed to be in her mid-30s, had been standing near the level crossing for long and suddenly jumped in front of the train. The sources added that they got information about it around 9.30 am following which a police team was rushed to the spot and took the mutilated body into their possession. The body has been kept at the mortuary of the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for identification.OC

Drug case: Man awarded 10 years in jail 

Chandigarh: A local court on Monday awarded 10-year jail to Joginder Singh, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, in a drug case. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Joginder was caught with 20 gm of smack and 18 banned injections. The police had laid a naka in Maloya on December 22, 2015. Noticing the police naka, he tried to escape following which the police got suspicious of him. Later, Joginder tried to throw the narcotics away, which were recovered by the police. TNS

Motorist killed in accident at Zirakpur 

Zirakpur: A motorist in his mid-40s died after he was hit by a truck near Nabha Sahib village here on Monday. The accused has been identified as Didar Singh, a resident of Panchkula. The victim was on his way to Banur to meet his relatives. Sources said when he reached near the village, a rashly-driven truck hit him from the rear end. Didar sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries. OC

593 patients benefit from socio-medical camp

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Senior Citizens’ Association organised a socio-medical camp this morning at Government High School, Maloya, Chandigarh. This was the third camp in a series of such camps, which are held in March-April every year to commemorate the death anniversary of PH Vaishnav, a retired IAS officer.Alchemist Hospital provided medical cover. Grover Laser ENT Hospital, Chandigarh, and GMSH-16 provided eye and dental care services, respectively. SAS Free Poly Clinic Trust provided homeopathic cover. A team of Sahayta Cancer Sahyog created awareness about cancer and de-addiction. As many as 593 patients got the benefit of the camp. TNS  

Day care operation theatre begins at PGI

A day care OT was started at the PGI on Monday. This will decrease the burden on the main operation theatre complex of the Nehru Hospital. Four cases belonging to urology were operated upon under general anaesthesia. Earlier in the morning, Parshant Kumar, Operation Theatre Assistant of the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, formally cut the ribbon for the inauguration of the day care operation theatre in the New OPD block. Day care surgical procedures belonging to the specialties of urology, ENT, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynecology and plastic surgery will be conducted in the day care OT complex. Though at present, only one operating room has been made functional, three more rooms will be made functional in the near future once the situation of anaesthesia and OT staff improves. The post-recovery area for the day care OT complex is also being made functional.

Over 100 volunteers donate blood at camp

Central Bank of India in collaboration with the Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Organisation arranged a blood donation camp here on Monday. The camp was inaugurated by Dhanpat Singh, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Haryana. A team of doctors lead by Dr Vinay, Assistant Professor from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, conducted the camp. As many as 104 persons donated blood at the camp. Ishwar Singh, Field General Manager of Central Bank of India, said requirement of blood could appear suddenly for any one. So, blood donation is very important for saving someone’s life.

Thieves decamp with cash, artificial jewellery from house

A theft incident was reported at a house in Sector 40 here. According to the police, complainant Dr Devider Garg reported that someone had stolen Rs 15,000, artificial jewellery, five ATM cards and important documents from his house on the intervening night of April 8 and 9. A case has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Purse stolen from Sector 17 bus stand, case registered

Deepak Singh, a resident of Electricity Colony, Sector 52, here reported that someone had stolen his purse containing Rs 1,060 and some important documents from his pocket at the Sector 17 bus stand. A theft case has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.
