Claims made by the CBSE that the All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) question paper was not leaked, and the sanctity of the examination held on May 3 was fully maintained, have been substantiated by the facts that have surfaced so far.

A close examination of the modus operandi employed by the miscreants during when the PMT exam was conducted on May 3 indicates that the paper was smuggled out of the examination centre after the commencement of the exam.

Senior police officers said the digital watches with in-built cameras seized from gang members lend credence to the argument that the paper was not leaked. Though, they admit that the watches could have been used to click pictures of the question paper and these images could have been smuggled out of the examination centre manually or electronically.

Investigations have revealed the gang members were trying to pass on the answer keys to their ‘clients’ taking the examination. This also indicates that after the paper was out, the gang members got it solved by their ‘subject-experts’ and then began conveying the answers to their candidates through sophisticated gadgets.

Moreover, police officers said had the gang got the question paper beforehand, they would have simply sold it off to the interested candidates and got away with the money, instead of taking the risk of sending candidates to examination halls with mobile SIMs, bluetooth devices and micro-earphones etc. and dictating the answers thereafter.

DSP Amit Bhatia, the in charge of the special investigating team (SIT) probing the matter, admitted that a clear picture would emerge only after the arrest of Roop Dangi, the kingpin of the gang.

“Raids are being conducted to nab Dangi,” he said, adding that the PMT candidates who had contacted the gang members and allegedly struck deals with them to pass the exam through unfair means had been identified and they would be asked to join the investigation.

The Rohtak police had busted a gang involved in the alleged leakage of the PMT paper with the arrest of four persons, including two dental surgeons and an MBBS student. They were arrested on May 3.

An answer key of 90 questions, mobile chips, micro-ear-phones, bluetooth devices and digital watches had been seized from the possession of the arrested persons.

The miscreants planned to smuggle the aforesaid articles by stitching these within the undergarments of the candidates who had agreed to pay Rs 15 to 20 lakh for the ‘deal’. The answer key had to be passed on to them through these gadgets. As many as nine PMT candidates are believed to have struck the deal.
