Residents of the Balichowki area, under the banner of the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), took out a march in protest against the murder of a Dalit girl here today.

A resident of Rahi village, Huma Devi went missing from her home on January 1 and her body was recovered from a ditch after nearly a month. The police arrested Thalia Ram, a resident of the same village who confessed to the crime. He told the police that he had killed Huma as she refused to marry her.

The protesters alleged that more than one person was involved in the crime and the police should arrest them at the earliest.

District CPM secretary Sant Ram said the law and order situation in the area had deteriorated.

Demanding immediate arrest of Huma’s murderers, he said it was the fourth such incident in the area.

He said they would intensify their agitation if the accused were not arrested.
