The Earth and Environmental Society, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences of Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) celebrated Earth Day today.
AK Mahajan from the department said they resolved to install vermin-compost system for the immediate betterment of nearby society around CUHP.
They also resolved to develop technique for reuse of refuse CFL and tube light to convert them into decorative items worth Rs 250-1,000 so that this could become a viable model for setting small-scale industries in villages.
“We have already developed a prototype and it is ready for demonstration,” he said
The department was already in the process of setting a unit to convert waste paper and biodegradable waste into value-added products, he said.
Mahajan said: “We need to save our environment to save our earth. Today students of environmental sciences have also tried to focus their cultural events on the theme of pollution and e-waste management and how to protect ourselves and mother earth from this increasing problem of e-waste, non-disposable waste.”
He said: “The increasing industrialisation is also leading to the death of rivers from the industrial toxic waste, deforestation and ultimately rise in earth’s temperature. So let us take a pledge to protect the earth from increasing air pollution, e-waste, unscientific mining, ozone depletion, deforestation, toxic dumps and water pollution.”
YS Verma, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, said: “We need to first clean ourselves and our ideas and then automatically we can save our earth and lead the world.”
Schools students from Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sidhwari, Army Public School, Yol, Scholar International Senior Secondary School, Mataur, and New Era School of Sciences, Chhattri, and HIET, Shahpur, participated in different competitions.

Students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sidhwari, were awarded the first prize in model presentation.
The model was based on earthquake resistant structures using damping for high rise building using Japanese’s technology. New Era School of Sciences, Chhattri, awarded the first prize in quiz competition.
