Various exhibitions marked the concluding day of the 59th founder’s day celebrations of Welham Girls’ School here on Sunday.
This year, the exhibitions were different as they ensured involvement of all students of class VI to XII. The students of all classes put up three shows of one hour each in their allotted classes wherein they strung together all subjects conforming to one theme. Through these exhibitions they established that there was a symbiotic relationship among all subjects.
‘Nukkad Nataks’ (street plays), live dance shows and art demonstrations made the exhibitions come alive.
The main founder’s day programme included speeches, prize distribution and a dance performance ‘Krishnaya Tubhyam Namah’, an artistic rendition featuring various antics of the universal teacher – Krishna.
Renowned for her environment-friendly ways and better known as the ‘auto-rickshaw diplomat’, Melba Pria, ambassador of Mexico to India, presided over the celebrations. An alumnus of the Harvard University, Pria has been an ambassador to Indonesia and was also posted at the Embassy of Mexico in Israel.
Vinita Bali, the CEO of Brittania Industries and also the president of the Board of Governors of the school, who was recognised by the Forbes Magazine as one of the 50 most influential businesswomen of Asia, shared the dais along with other members of the school board, including Matthew Raggett, headmaster of The Doon School; and Gunmeet Bindra, principal of Welham Boys’ School.
The annual report was presented by school principal Padmini Sambasivam. The event was also attended by former principals Shanti Verma and Jyotsna Brar. Many former staff members also attended the celebrations.
The school gave away awards to recognise achievements of students in academics, sports, helpfulness, creativity, compassion, and community service. A ‘Long Service Award’ was presented to three staff members and six support staff for having served the institution for 25 years. The celebrations ended with a grand dinner for parents, guests, staff and students, accompanied by a students’ live band.
