Around 100 girl students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Model Town, were given cycles by Maheshinder Singh Grewal, adviser to Punjab Chief Minister during a function.
Speaking on the occasion, Maheshinder Singh Grewal said the Punjab government is committed for the overall development of the state and main focus is on education, health and infrastructure building.
While listing the achievements of the Punjab government, Grewal said under the Mai Bhago Scheme around 4.86 lakh girl students of Class XI and XII were provided with cycles free of cost. CM Parkash Singh Badal has started this scheme to boost the girl students and their parents for education.
Apart from Mai Bhago Scheme, 30,000 scholarships were being given to students with 80 per cent marks by the government and meritorious schools were opened for the intelligent schools, Grewal said.
He said a grant of Rs 5 crore was released for the construction of new blocks and the buildings were completed within a few years.
District education officer (DEO) Paramjit Kaur Chahal, DPRO Prabhdeep Singh, School principal Nahar Singh, vice- principal Jagroop Singh, lecturer Harjit Kaur Makkar besides several others were also present during the cycle distribution programme.
