In nearby Kansali village, a Dalit groom was allegedly stopped from carrying out the ritual of “ghurchari” as well as from playing DJ. The police have booked 19 persons under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, on the complaint of the groom’s father, Pala Ram.

Ishwar Singh, a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, said notices had been issued to the Yamunanagar DC and SP for a detailed report within three days. “On October 10, my son Karam Chand reached the Goga Madi temple to offer prayers.

“Several upper caste youths arrived there. They told my son that being a Dalit, he could not hold the 'ghurchari' ceremony," Pala Ram told the police. He alleged that the youths thrashed close relatives, including women, and the driver of the utility vehicle carrying the DJ party.

Panick-stricken, the village Dalits met today and decided to lodge a police complaint. Sarpanch Manju Devi's husband Raj Kumar Rana said the matter would be probed and the "real culprits" would not be spared.
