The Congress party today claimed that Gursimran Singh Mand, claiming to be the vice-chairman of Local Bodies cell of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, was not a functionary of the party.
A former Congress man, Mand had been expelled from the party for indiscipline and anti-party activities, said Gupreet Singh Gogi, president of District Congress Committee (Urban).
Mand had, on Tuesday, given a statement demanding that Balwant Singh Rajoana, awarded death sentence for murder of the then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, be hanged. He had also questioned the hunger strike by Surat Singh Khalsa to press the demand for release of all Sikh detainees.
Ishwarjot Singh Cheema, chairman, Economic cell of PPCC said Mand was in the habit of making utterances not keeping with the party line and his sole objective was to gain cheap popularity.
