The district administration has shifted the statue of former CM Choudhary Devi Lal from the Meerut Chowk to pave way for the six-laning of the National Highway 1. It has been shifted 500 yards from its present location.

Yogesh Kumar, sub-divisional magistrate, said, “We have shifted the statue around 500 yards back from the present location with the consent of INLD leaders.” He it would give relief to commuters from traffic congestion.

Narendra Sangwan, former Gharaunda MLA, said that several meetings were held with the administrative officials following which it was decided to shift the statue.

Sources said the National Highway Authority of India had submitted a proposal for shifting the statue five years back. But it could not be implemented. The construction company was not able to widen the road and the work on flyover was halted.
