On the recommendations of a two-member committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Director of the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), Longowal, Dr Sunil Pandey was today shifted. He was appointed the director of the institute for five years with effect from August 12, 2011.
The two-member inquiry committee was constituted to inquire into the incidents of violence that took place on the SLIET campus on May 6, 2013. Due to the violence, the institute had suffered a loss of about Rs 10 crore.
The MHRD has appointed Dr VK Jain, Professor, Department of Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering, SLIET, Longowal, as the acting director of the institute till the appointment of a regular director or until further orders. Dr Jain assumed the charge as the acting director of the institute today.
Dr Pandey has been repatriated to his parent organisation, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. The orders were issued by the MHRD yesterday.
Tension gripped the SLIET campus on May 6, 2013, after an unruly mob of hundreds of students went on the rampage when top SLIET authorities reportedly refused to listen to their demands and grievances. The mob set the SLIET Entrance Test (SET) office building and an auditorium on fire.
