Uttarkashi District Magistrate Indudhar Baudai, while chairing a meeting of the district-level road safety committee at the Collectorate auditorium today, directed officials to ensure that traffic laws were obeyed by commuters.
The DM said most of the accidents occur due to speeding, overloading or driving under the influence of liquor.
He said police officials and members of taxi, bus and jeep unions should consider it to be their moral duty to follow traffic rules.
Taxi and bus union leaders said they be given some rights to check overloading. They suggested that vehicles fined for overloading should not be allowed to ply for some days. They said awareness campaigns should be organised on a regular basis.
Bus and jeep union leaders said mining mafia had broken several guardrails and parapets on the Dharasu-Yamunotri road to reach to the river freely. They said accidents were a common sight on the stretch. The DM directed the SP to look into the matter without any delay.
He directed the National Highways Authority of India to repair the road near Brahmkhal on a priority basis.
The DM asked the BRO, the PWD and other departments to place signages at blind bends.
