Docs’ transfer to Nahan hits health services
Palampur, May 9
The large-scale transfer of doctors and paramedical staff to the upcoming medical college at Nahan has affected health services in the state.
Recently, the state government has transferred medical staff from Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (TMC), Tanda, and other district hospitals to Nahan.
The transfers were carried out to meet the staff requirement at the Nahan medical college ahead of the visit of a team of the Medical Council of India (MCI). A MCI team is likely to visit Nahan in May end or June to take final call on granting official recognition to the college.
There is an acute shortage of doctors in the state as 500 posts of doctors are lying vacant in IGMC, TMC, and other health institutions in the state. Residents of Palampur, Nurpur and Dharmshala protested the transfer of specialists to Nahan. Sources said the state Health Department had failed to create infrastructure for three medical colleges at Nahan, Hamirpur and Chamba. — OC
