The Yamunanagar district branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed World Rare Diseases Day by organising a seminar on 200 rare diseases.
Dr Anil Aggarwal, district president of the IMA, said, “Neither public, including many doctors, nor the government is aware of many of the rare diseases we discussed at the seminar. Though these ailments are not very rare in India, they are often diagnosed very late and treatment is expensive.”
He said the institutions and individuals providing medical services to the public at large should educate and update themselves about new medical discipline and rare diseases, so as to save more lives with little more awareness and wisdom.
Dr Aggarwal said the IMA also urged the government to fix some budget for the care of people suffering from rare diseases such as Gaucher’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
Specialists from all medical fields, including Dr Kapil Dev, Dr Mahavir Goel, Dr Rajan Sharma, Dr Nature Bakshi, Dr Narender Kashyap, Dr JK Gulati, Dr Vikram Bharti, Dr Janak Chaudhary, Dr Sunila Soni and Dr Saroj Aggarwal, spoke on the occasion.
