If everything goes as per Dehradun police plans, a counselling session for traffic offenders would be started in order to curb rash and negligence driving in the city. The police have consulted law specialists to embark on counselling sessions for traffic offenders.

The city police will impound registration of certificate of vehicle along with driving licence of traffic violators instead of challaning them. The traffic violators would be called for one-time counselling, which would last for five to six hours.

Senior police officers will deliver a lecture on importance of following traffic rules. Apart from making them watch audio-visual films on traffic rules, the police want to make offenders pledge to follow traffic rules in future.

The officers said the main idea behind this session is to make them realise the dangerous consequences of rash and negligent driving. Police officers said most of the accidents occur due to rash and negligent driving and being hooked to the cellphone while driving.

Talking to The Tribune, SP (traffic) Pradeep Rai said youngsters are known for jumping signals or indulging in triple-driving, but to the shock of the police, motorists were regularly challaned for talking on mobile phones while riding in the city.

“Traffic police personnel conduct awareness programmes for creating awareness among masses about the importance of following traffic rules,” he said.

Rai said vehicles should never to be driven in an inebriated condition, use of cellphones while driving should be discarded, traffic signals should be paid heed to, rash and negligent driving should be avoided, triple-riding should be stopped and helmets and seat-belts should be used while driving.

Police officers lamented that traffic offenders do not hesitate to violate traffic rules as the penalty is very nominal. Police sources said the police were maintaining data of drivers booked in traffic violation cases along with vehicle numbers and the action would be severe if the violators are booked again.
