The deceased has been identified as Manpreet Kaur. She was an MA, BEd and MSc (IT). Those booked have been identified as her husband Surinder Singh, father-in-law Jagtar Singh, mother-in-law Rajinder Kaur and sisters-in-law. They are residents of Narike Kalan village in Sagrur. No arrest has been made in the case so far.

The deceased’s father, Gurmel Singh said his daughter got married to Surinder on December 5 last year. He spent over Rs 10 lakh on her marriage and gave enough dowry as per the wishes of her in-laws. “A few days after the marriage, her in-laws started subjecting her to mental and physical harassment on the plea that she had brought less dowry. When my daughter’s patience broke down, she revealed everything to me. I, along with a few villagers, went to meet her in-laws and everybody there agreed not to harass her daughter. However, they continued to harass my daughter,” he added.

He told the police that on January 24, her daughter was thrashed by her husband and other members of his family, following which they threw the girl out of their house. Since then, she had been living at her parental place. “Her in-laws wanted a car in dowry, due to which they had been ill-treating her,” he alleged.

Sources said earlier, the deceased’s father had lodged a complaint with the city police. The police had called both parties on April 19 but the victim opted to end her life by hanging from the ceiling fan before that.

A case under section 304B, 498A and 120 B of the IPC has been registered.
