While the UT Administration and the Municipal Corporation regularly conduct anti-encroachment drives in Sectors 22, 19 and 15, but over the years Sector 48 motor market has turned into a hub of encroachments.
Roads and parking lot in the area close to the motor market are being used for repairing of vehicles. Encroachments by shop owners and mechanics are such in large numbers that a common man cannot even think of entering the market to park his vehicle.
Even residents of the nearby societies, especially women, find it difficult to cross the area. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has no meaning for mechanics. After painting and repairing of vehicles, they leave the place with newspapers and other waste material, which enter the societies whenever there is a strong wind.
As the MC has turned a blind eye towards the encroachment in the Sector 48 motor market, the encroachers continue to operate from the government land without having any fear of the civic body.
Jagat Singh, a resident of Sector 48, said the authorities should keep a regular check on these encroachments.
Rajiv Kumar, another resident of Mani Majra, said: “It becomes difficult to drive on the road adjoining the motor market due to encroachments. Sometimes mechanics park vehicles in front of the society gates as well”.
