English version of Chatak’s book out

The English version of one of the famous books written by Govind Chatak, renowned author from Uttarakhand, hit the stands in Mussoorie yesterday.

The book titled "Folk tales of Uttarakhand" originally writen in Hindi by Govind Chatak the author from Garhwal has been translated into English by Arun Pant, associate professor, Department of English, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University, and is published by Jay Key Enterprises.

The original version of the book titled "Uttarakhand Ki Lok Kathayein" was written by Govind Chatak, eminent author from Garhwal who immortalised the heroes appearing in various folk tales around the

region.

Arun Pant, the author the book, said he first came across the book during his travels and while he was translating story of "Tilu Rauteli'''' written by Dr Govind Chatak.

Pant''s close association with Chatak brought him closer to his works and after his demise he thought of translating his book on folk tales into English and immortalising his work in English.

Pant said it took around one year for him to translate the book in English as he did not want to lose the original essence of the book written by Govind Chatak in Hindi.

"The folk tales represent the collective conscience of the region and also relate to the universal aspect of human life represented through such tales, said Arun Pant.

Pant said he was fascinated by the authenticity of the facts written by Govind Chatak in his original Hindi book which led to the translation in English.

The members from the Kirti Nagar block are elated at the English version of the book hitting the stands and believe that the international audience will also come across the tales of the region which are akin to Cinderella and Goldylocks in some or other form through this book.
