A Continuous Medical Education (CME) programme with a special focus on problems of miscarriage and incontinence in women was organised by Max Hospital, Mohali, in Ambala today.
The key observations made by the experts, including Dr Seema Wadhwa, senior consultant of laparoscopic and gynaecological surgery, were that nearly 20 per cent of mid-trimester pregnancy losses (miscarriages) are due to weak uterus.
Also, 41 to 50 per cent women above the age of 50 have weak uterus leading to incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
The CME was organised in association with the National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA). Over 60 doctors representing the NIMA from Ambala city attended the Continuous Medical Education programme.
Treatment options
Talking about the treatment options, Dr Wadhwa said cervical stitch applied by an expert at the right time in pregnancy is lifesaving for the unborn child, prevents pregnancy loss and corrects the weak uterus due to cervical incompetence. Prolapse a cause of weak uterus in elderly and rarely in young women can be corrected by pelvic floor repairs. This can be done laparoscopically (single incision).
