“If I would have known his death was calling, I would never have allowed him to leave the room”, wails the mother of Varinder Singh Sandhu, the 26-year-old, who was brutally murdered on March 13. Undergoing treatment for depression, Varinder’s mother takes a pill each night to help her sleep.

She breaks down every time she tries to talk and is adamant that she will not be at peace until justice is served. Justice, she says will only be served after the culprits are hanged to death. Already separated from her husband, Varinder, was the only family she had. Having raised him all alone, she was looking for a suitable match for her only son.

However, on the fateful night, her son was abducted from outside his room, attacked with swords and dragged head first from a moving car before being crushed under its wheels. While eight of the nine have been arrested, the family says that there were 11 and that the police are trying to shield them.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anil Kumar Dhawan, has time and again claimed that the arrested accused have said that they were eight, hence there was no question of any other suspects. However, the police are yet to catch one more accused and are yet to recover the revolver used by the accused. Main accused Manmeet Singh Waraich is the son of INLD councillor from Ward 8, Kuljit Kaur Waraich, and was arrested the day after the murder.
