Sangrur, August 3
Hundreds of farmers, led by state BKU (Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan, today took out a protest march in the city, stating justice had been “denied” to them in the murder case of Sadhu Singh Takhtupura, press secretary of the union. Eleven persons were acquitted in the case.
Takhtupura was allegedly murdered on February 16, 2010, at Bhindi Aulakh village (Ajnala). The accused were acquitted by a court in the last week of July.
Ugrahan alleged, “Takhtupura has not got justice as the persons mentioned in the FIR got lodged by them were not included in the proceedings of the case. Instead, the police included 12 other persons, due to which they got the benefit of doubt.”
He said members of their union had taken out rallies in Bathinda, Sangrur, Ferozepur and Ludhiana on Monday and the same would be done in Barnala, Mansa, Moga, Fazilka, Muktsar etc on Tuesday.
Ugrahan said the union had decided to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek justice for Takhtupura.
The farmer leaders also talked about demands of the farmers which had not been accepted and implemented by the Centre and the state government so far. The demands include the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s report, Rs 5 lakh compensation and a government job for the families of debt-ridden farmers who had committed suicides and waiver of all types of loans of farmers.
