Former Doon MLA dies of cardiac arrest

Lajja Ram, four-time MLA from the Doon constituency and former Chief Parliamentary Secretary, died at the age of 82 following a cardiac arrest at Baddi here this afternoon.
Suffering from a heart ailment and diabetes, he was recently discharged from a local hospital. He suffered a severe pain in the chest this afternoon following which he was rushed to a local hospital where he breathed his last.
Lajja Ram is survived by his wife, three sons, including Ramkumar Chaudhary who is an MLA from Doon, and two daughters. His elder son Madanlal is the pradhan of the local municipal committee.
His cremation will take place tomorrow at his native village Sandholi at 10.30 am, informed his family members.
The veteran leader began his political career as a pradhan of the local panchayat in 1972 and retained this post till 1985. He also remained the Vice-Chairman of the Jogindra Cooperative Bank and Director of the Nalagarh Marketing Committee. Known as an assertive leader, Lajja Ram is much respected in the area for his political acumen.
He won his first Vidhan Sabha poll in 1990 when he was elected on a Janta Dal ticket after ousting the then popular MLA Ramprakash Chandel.
