The “apathetic” attitude of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) towards garbage lifting in several colonies in Jakhan (ward number 3) has left the residents peeved. Garbage can be seen scattered on vacant plots, other places and even roadsides. Foul smell emanates from the heaps of garbage, adding to residents’ woes.

Residents say the garbage collection system should be improved as it has become difficult to pass through city roads. People say the absence of garbage bins in the ward worsens the sanitation problem. The apathy of the Municipal Corporation can also result in the outbreak of diseases, they say.

The ward number 3 comprises nine slums, including Gabbar Basti, Chetna Basti and Nai Basti. Though residents laud the officials concerned for road construction and providing adequate water supply even during the peak season, they say the delay in repair and construction of pavements along the Rajpur road has been troubling the commuters as the area turns slippery after rainfall.

PublicSpeak

I have made efforts to get garbage bins placed in different areas but could not succeed due to unavailability of adequate space. Roads were repaired on priority after sewage lines were laid but sewage treatment plant hasn’t started yet. — Daya Joshi, councillor, Jakhan ward 3

The DMC should improve the door-to-door garbage collection system in different colonies and slums. This is essential if the authorities concerned want to ensure cleanliness in the ward. — Vinod Thapa, a resident of Jakhan

There is a huge problem of parking space in the ward. The situation worsens during weekends when bumper-to-bumper traffic jams are witnessed. Something should be done about it. — Aasif, MT view apartment

}Though the colonies falling under the ward have roads in a good condition, the authorities concerned should install garbage bins in different places to end sanitary woes. — Namrita Karanwal, Jakhan
