Worried over the rising cases of matrimonial disputes and divorce in the state, the Punjab Women Commission (PWC) has planned to start pre-marital counselling sessions in colleges. The aim is to create awareness among youngsters, mainly girls, about the causes that led to matrimonial disputes and preventive measures.
Another motive is also to make the girls aware of their rights and legal remedies in case they face any domestic violence after marriage.
Talking to The Tribune, PWC Chairperson Paramjit Kaur Landran said the proposal was sent to the state government following which it was decided to rope in colleges across the state for purpose. “The project, which will be akin to the Delhi Women Commission’s initiative of educating girls on the matter, will take off soon. A meeting with the DPI, Colleges, is being held to give the final shape to the project,” she said.
Under this project, girls would be mentally prepared to tackle matrimonial blues on their own. “Our purpose is to tell girls that they should not let any matrimonial issues crop up and if it does, they should not immediately approach the police. They should rather try to resolve the matter on their own to prevent divorce,” Landran said, adding that still if domestic violence continued, the girls would be make aware about their rights and legal remedies available to them.
She also took serious note of the lethargic approach of police stations in not sending the copy of FIR to the Child Welfare Committee, which is mandatory to provide legal aid to and for rehabilitation of rape victims.
