Governor honours bravery award winner

Governor KK Paul today honoured Sumit Mamgain of Rashtriya Inter College, Raipur, Dehradun, at Raj Bhawan here. Fifteen-year-old Sumit has been honoured with the Sanjay Chopra National Bravery Award 2017.
Sumit’s cousin Ritesh was dragged away by a leopard in November 2015. Ritesh told Sumit to run away and save his life. But the brave lad decided to fight the leopard and save his cousin’s life. Recipient of the Sanjay Chopra Award, the local boy fought valiantly by holding the tail of the leopard and later hit it with a sickle which made the animal ferocious, but Sumit continued the fight till it ran away.
After taking his cousin home, he contacted the 108 service and the injured Ritesh was shifted to Dehradun Hospital. Ritesh was fine once his wounds healed.
The Governor honoured Sumit with Rs 50,000 and a certificate. His parents were also honoured.
Sumit is a student of Class IX. Deputy Chairperson of the State Child Welfare Council, Dr IS Pal, and Kusum Rani Naithani, along with several office-bearers of the council, were also present at the Raj Bhawan on the occasion.
The Sanjay Chopra National Bravery Award is given to 25 Indian children for meritorious acts of bravery against all odds. The awards are given by the Goverment of India and the Indian Council for Child Welfare. The award was instituted in 1957.
