Gurdaspur, August 6
Jagdeep Singh Hundal today became the seventh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to be shifted from this border district in the past five years. He had a term of just four months.
In the neighbouring police district of Batala, the state government has transferred 10 SSPs in the past six years. Similarly in Pathankot district, the then SSP Rakesh Kaushal, who averted a tragedy on the Pathankot-Gurdaspur railway track, was shifted days after the January 2 terror attack.
Sources said Hundal was transferred as he did not enjoy good relations with some SAD leaders.
Top politicians of the area, including Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa, have often demanded that IPS officers be posted in the border areas to ensure better policing. In the past five years, of these three districts, only Batala has had a direct-recruit IPS officer when Inderbir Singh remained at the helm from December 7, 2014, to August 8, 2015.
Hundal’s predecessor Gurpreet Singh Toor was an IPS officer, but he was promoted from the ranks.
