There is tension in Hansi over the naming of a chowk on NH-10. While the Jat Dharamshala management wants it to be named after philanthropist Seth Chhaju Ram of Alakhpura village, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yaadgar Samiti wants the chowk be named after Madan Lal Dhingra.
Dhara Singh of the Jat Dharamshala said they had submitted a request way back in 2006 that a statue of Seth Chhaju Ram, who had established a chain of education institutions and hospitals in Haryana, be installed at the chowk.
“Born into a Jat family, he not only set up schools, colleges and hospitals, but also earned a name in Kolkata as an extraordinary businessman,” he said.
But Subhash Malhotra of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Yaadgar Samiti claimed that the local municipal committee had adopted a resolution in 2013 to name the site after Dhingra. He said they would meet Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in this regard with a fresh proposal.
Historian Dr Mahender Singh said the site had no historical significance and suggested that the road from Hansi to Alakhpura be dedicated to Seth Chhaju Ram.
