Abohar, April 16
Rajasthan Irrigation Department Chief Engineer Raj Kumar Chaudhary has assured a 50-member Congress deputation that supply of water to canals starting from Harike Barrage, which has been suspended on March 26, will be released on April 21 and is likely to reach the destination by April 25.
However, the deputation led by Sriganganagar district Congress committee president Santosh Saharan flayed the state government for poor planning, inadequate monitoring and false promises. Members of the delegation said there was apparently no chance of completion of the repairs of common banks of two canals on time.
Kisan Sangharsh Samiti members also inspected the work on Sunday at the Ferozepur feeder, Harike Barrage, the Gang (Bikaner) Canal and the Mallanwala Headworks.
Samiti spokesman Subhash Sehgal said Punjab officials, on the condition of anonymity, had told the deputation that it might take at least 10 more days to complete the work on the Ferozepur Feeder and the Mallanwala Headworks even as the work was going on round the clock. He said, “Cleaning from RD 47 to RD 308 of the Gang Canal is yet to be taken up and repairs of the Ferozepur Feeder from RD 90 to RD 140 may also take much more time.”
