Pithoragarh, August 3
Heavy to moderate rains for the past 24 hours has led to waterlogging in the Terai region.
The Pithoragarh disaster management department said the region witnessed 300 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The water level in the Kali river touched the danger mark last evening, creating panic among people living near the river.
“The river is flowing at 889.5 m, only .5 m below the danger point,” said RS Rana, district disaster management officer.
He said heavy rains had led the closure of the Munsiyari-Thal highway and damaged some houses in Berinag subdivision.
Rudrapur and Sitarganj residents are grappling with the problem of waterlogging. “There is need for proper water drainage and sewer treatment plants in the towns of the Terai region, particularly Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts,” said Soni Koli, Mayor, Rudrapur.
