Chandigarh, February 8

There seems to be no end to controversies surrounding Mayor Asha Jaswal. High drama was witnessed after a person called staff of the sanitation wing of the Municipal Corporation to clean the area in front of her house in Sector 21 today.

Members of the Mayor’s family were surprised when they found safai karamcharis in front of their house cleaning areas along the boundary of the house and the lawns.

The family members came to know about their “uninvited guests” when Prem Pal Sahota asked for a glass of the water from them in the morning.

When the members enquired about the presence of the safai karamcharis inside the house, the person told them that it was part of the Swachh Abhiyan. The family members were informed by the sanitation staff that Sahota called them up saying that the Mayor was angry over poor sanitation in front of her house.

Sources said Sahota fled from the spot soon after he realised that his trick had been exposed. Later, he was arrested on a complaint of the Mayor.

Satish Kumar, DSP (East), said they had received a complaint that a person had trespassed on the Mayor’s house in Sector 21. “Acting on the complaint, Sahota, a resident of Sector 40, has been arrested,” the DSP said. The police said the accused dealt in the sale and purchase of used cars in Sector 7. A case in this regard has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.

The Mayor tried to downplay the incident saying that the complaint was filed so that such incidents were not repeated.

Today’s incident happened close on the heels of an FIR being registered against the Mayor for trespassing and violating provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Snehalaya.
