Srinagar, March 11
An improvised explosive device (IED) kept in a pressure cooker was recovered along the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway early this morning.
The IED was detected by the Road Opening Party (ROP) of the Army around 8 am near Nowgam along the national highway.
“When the Army found a pressure cooker, sniffer dogs were called in and they confirmed the presence of explosives. The area was cordoned off and traffic on the busy highway was immediately stopped and the bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot,” sources said.
“The IED was later defused by the bomb disposal squad at 11 am,” they said. The Srinagar-Baramulla national highway is always secured by the ROP for its daily convoys that take this road to reach border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara.
A defence spokesman in Srinagar said the quantity of explosives used on such a busy stretch of an important road could have resulted in loss of lives and property.
