Mussoorie, February 17
The area around Kempty Falls near Mussoorie is witnessing rampant illegal constructions that have scared slopes in the region and damaged the environment. Kempty Falls is a popular tourist destination but lately builders flouting all norms have dug up fragile slopes and are constructing cottages, flats and apartments in its surrounding area. This will damage water resources and also advesely impact the existence of Kempty Falls.
Residents say that ongoing illegal constructions have been going on for a long time and the situation could turn uglier if not handled immediately. If rampant illegal constructions are not stopped the whole area would turn into a concrete jungle, they add.
Patwari Baldev Singh Tomar says the constructions are old that have been going on for a long time. No new construction has been sanctioned and notices have been served on persons undertaking illegal constructions. However, surprisingly work is going on though notices have been served. Forest Range Officer Neelam Bartwal says illegal constructions are not under her purview but if the forest cover is damaged, they will certainly take action.
