Before going on a pen-down strike, MGNREGA officials started uploading the pictures of the assets created by their workers under the projects assigned to them.
These pictures will be added to the project for geotagging and mapping of the assets created under MGNREGA in the district. The geotagging of the projects will be done by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
According to an official, an agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Rural Development and ISRO for geotagging. The initiative has been taken to monitor and track the assets created under the rural employment scheme.
Under this, staff members of MGNREGA, including Gram Rozgar Sahayak or engineer, will upload the picture of the asset along with the details necessary for the project and ISRO will geotag the asset.
“MGNREGA workers don’t just do labour work, but they create real assets. Lakhs of assets are created in the country every month by workers working under this scheme. So, monitoring of these assets by the government though geotagging will be a good step,” one of the staff members said.
Being on pen-down strike, however, one of the staff members said this had been an additional work given by the government to them. “We have uploaded pictures of some assets, but the process is slow, because we are already pre-occupied with work and now this is additional. As of now, the staff is on indefinite strike, so all work will be on the back burner until the strike is over,” another staff member said.
