Support pours in for 20-year-old Gurmehar Kaur who has been in the spotlight for the past few days after raising her voice against violence in the wake of clashes at Ramjas College last week.
Gurmehar had started a social campaign saying that she was not afraid of the ABVP, following which she was allegedly issued rape and death threats.
Annoyed over this incident, members of the Istri Jagriti Manch, Punjab, has rendered support to Gurmehar and demanded registration of cases against all those involved in the Ramjas incident and those issuing threats to Gurmehar.
Manch leaders Amandeep Kaur Deol and Pardeep Kaur Ubha said: “It is depressing as to how the freedom of expression was being given a seat in a country that we call progressive. Whenever any female tries to raise her voice against the atrocities being meted out to her, society rather than supporting her stands against her, which is unjustified”.
“Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion and no one has the right to question or threaten her. It is saddening that Gurmehar has returned to her native place in Punjab sensing fear. The Centre and the Delhi government should immediately ensure her safety,” they rued.
They also demanded the registration of a case against the ABVP volunteers who allegedly attacked SFS volunteers at Panjab University, Chandigarh, yesterday.
