Chants of “Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi” echoed outside the counting centre for Ward No. 17 to 20 at the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET), Sector 26, today while the Congress supporters prefer to sit mum till the declaration of the result.
Hundreds of supporters were seen waiting with garlands, party flags, drums and a convoy of vehicles to celebrate the victory in the Municipal corporation elections. The commuters too faced harassment due to the vehicles parked by activists of the parties on the road.
It was also a tough day for the police personnel deployed outside the counting centre. As the counting for Ward No. 20 started, a large number of supporters of the Congress candidate, Shashi Shankar Tiwari, and BJP’s Shakti Prakash Devshali gathered outside the gate of the CCET, raising slogans in support of their leaders. In fact, some supporters of BJP candidate Shakti Prakash Devshali started claiming victory of their leaders even before the counting started.
With the announcement of the results for Ward No. 17, in which BJP candidate Asha Jaiswal won, the Congress supporters left the venue even without waiting for their candidate to come out of the centre.
But as the news of the victory of Congress bigwig Devinder Singh Balba spread, supporters of the party made a come back and started raising slogan “Babla zindabadh”, giving no credit to their party. In fact, Babla also stated that he won due to his past work.
Interestingly, on the victory of the Independent candidate Dalip Sharma, leaders and supporters of other parties also congratulate him. His supporters danced and raised the slogan “auto chal gaya”.
