Residents of Jagraon have been facing immense difficulties due to the pathetic condition of the various city roads. Roads, including Sherpur Road, Disposal Road, Malak Road and Raikot Road have been a perfect picture of neglect. These roads have not been constructed for a long period of time.

Though the local administration had started the recarpeting work of Sherpur Road and Malak Road a few months ago, yet it has not been completed so far. The Municipal Council had carried out patch work on Raikot Road sometime back but there has been no improvement in its condition.

The local residents said they had been facing tough time due to constant delay being caused by the authorities in the construction of these roads. “Various roads of the town are in a pathetic condition. The commuters are made to suffer at no fault of theirs. The tall claims of the local administration to improve the condition of the roads have fallen flat,” rued Tejwant Singh, a resident of Malak Road.

Mukesh Kumar, a resident of New Shastri Nagar locality on Disposal Road, said: “Five years has passed since the road was last constructed and since then the authorities concerned have not even repaired the road. We have a tough time crossing this road every day.”

Reportedly, the residents of localities on Disposal Road claimed that they had raised the issue during the recently held Parliament Elections and they were assured by the leaders of the political parties, including those from the ruling party, that the road would be constructed at the earliest. But the residents are still waiting for the construction work to begin.

The residents are now hoping that the road will be recarpeted before the Municipal Elections to be held in near future.

Meanwhile, Jagraon Market Committee secretary Jaswinder Singh said he was aware of the problems being faced by the people due to bad condition of the roads. “The construction work on Sherpur Road and Malak Road would be completed soon,” he assured.
