Jains protest Rajasthan HC ban on ‘Santhara’ tradition

As part of a nationwide protest against Rajasthan High Court’s ban on ‘Santhara’ tradition prevalent amongst Jains, community members today kept their business establishments closed and staged a protest rally here today. The community members took out a silent march carrying placards, demanding repulsion of the High Court decision.
The march, which started from Jain dharamshala, was led by Jhuluk Samarpan Sagar Maharaj and passed through various streets of the city to culminate at the District Magistrate’s (DM) office.
The community leaders presented a memorandum of their demands, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to District Magistrate Ravinath Raman. The Jains contended that ‘Santhara’ tradition was part of their religion in which anyone having a predomination of death stopped taking food and water.
The community members also took out silent marches at Vikasnagar and Rishikesh towns of Dehradun district.
