Jammu, December 28
Condemned for its failure to lift waste from different parts of the city, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has come up with a ward-wise list of sanitation staff and other officials to deal with the residents’ complaints.
The corporation has uploaded names of supervisors and sanitary inspectors for each ward on its website — jmc.nic.in. The city ranks 427 on sanitation in the country.
Jammu, with an estimated population of 15-lakh, generates 400 tonne of solid waste every day and half of it remains scattered in different parts of the city due to shortage of manpower and absence of a proper dumping ground.
“Our area has become a garbage dump. We are facing lot of problems but there is no one to complaint to. The latest move of the JMC is a step in the right direction, but officials should attend to our calls,” said Bhagwan Singh, a city resident.
Heaps of garbage, stagnant water and chocked drains in every part of the city tell a tale of neglect and indifferent attitude of the authorities concerned.
City residents are also to be blamed for the present mess as many of them dumps the waste on road without affecting the image of the winter capital spread over 117 sq km area. Jammu comprises 71 municipal wards.
“The government is promoting pilgrim tourism and projecting Jammu as a pilgrim town, but the only thing which visitors remember about our city is filth and rotting waste. There is need for strong coordination between the civic bodies and residents,” said Sushil Abrol, a university student.
