Dr Omesh Goyal, a native of Joga town of the Malwa region, who is Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana, has been felicitated with Dr D P Basu Award for the Best Clinical Research Paper.

The award was given by the Association of Physicians of India during its 72nd National Convention held in Mumbai recently. Over 7, 000 doctors from across the country reportedly attended the event. Goyal was chosen for the award in recognition of the research performed by him in the Department of Gastroenterology, DMCH, which focused on better treatment and outcome for patients with liver cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis.

While discussing the paper, Goyal said alcoholic hepatitis was a life-threatening disorder which occurred due to the excessive alcohol consumption and its mortality rate had gone up steeply during the past few decades. He said timely management with specific medication could reduce the mortality rate and help avoid liver transplant. High protein diet, corticosteroids, pentoxifylline and bovine colostrum were cited to be more useful in the treatment of this condition.
