Karmo Devi, 45, of Barva village in the district is being treated at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Civil Hospital (LNJPCH) with severe undernourishment.

Her haemoglobin (Hb) is recorded 1 gram at the hospital and doctors said it was a rare case that a patient in such condition survived. Doctors attending her said that she was responding well to the treatment. Hailing from a very poor family, she was admitted to the hospital on April 12.

Dr Shailender Mamgain, heart and TB specialist at the LNJPCH, said four units of blood had already been administered to Karmo till Sunday evening.

He said a patient with less than 3 gm Hb had very strong chances of severe heart attack and other adverse health conditions, but she had not developed any serious complication.

At the time of hospital admission, Karmo was gasping for breath and her condition was very critical, said Dr Mamgain.

“But she has not shown any serious complications. Our first priority is to bring her Hb at the optimum level and we will get her fully examined on Monday,” he said.

“Karmo appeared to be a patient of chronic low haemoglobin level where her body had acclimatised to the potential life-threatening health condition. Anaemia is a common issue among women in Haryana but it is highly uncommon to see such a severe case,” said Mamgain.

Karmo’s husband Balbir Singh passed away last year and she lives with her son and a daughter, both students. Being the sole breadwinner, she showed her concern for the family. “I use to earn money after petty works at farms in the village. I want to return back to work to earn for my children,” she said from her hospital bed.
