Kotli (Khanna), May 30

Harkirat Singh (40), grandson of late Chief Minister Beant Singh, was cremated at his native village here today. The pyre was lit by his brother and Khanna MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli.

An “ardas” was performed by SGPC member Harpal Singh Jalah. Political leaders belonging to various parties and local residents were present in large numbers.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, Ludhiana MP, Charanjit Singh Chani, CLP leader, Shamsher Singh Dullo, Rajya Sabha MP, Lal Singh and other Congress leaders mourned Harkirat’s death and termed it a big loss to the family and area residents. Others present included Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, Amrik Singh Dhillon, Kuljit Singh Nagra, Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Mohd Sadiq, Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, Jagmohan Singh Kang, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Rana Gurjit Singh, Jagbir Singh Brar, Gurkanwal Kaur, Kartar Singh Buani, Jagmeet Singh Brar and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, besides IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal.

Harkirat was the sarpanch of Kotli village. He died under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Chandigarh yesterday.

Harkirat’s autopsy was conducted at the PGI, Chandigarh. His pistol has been seized by the police.
