Clothes collected

Human rights, an NGO, held a camp in Ward number 29 and collected woolen clothes, blankets, shoes and many more accessories for the needy. Chairman Chirag Thapar said last year many poor persons had died due to extremely cold weather. The NGO had decided to lend a helping hand to the people in need. Similar camps will be organised in other areas of the city as well, he said.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Vichar Manch will hold a seminar on ‘Rising tide of Fascism in India and Democratic Rights’ at Punjabi Bhawan on December 7. AK Maleri, president of the manch, said the main speaker would be Gautam Navlakha, crusader for democratic rights.

Probe demanded

The 1984 Sikh Katle-Aam Peerat Welfare Society take onto BJP leader and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Navjot Kaur Sidhu over the alleged misappropriation of Rs 100 crore in the disbursement of resettlement grant of Rs 2 lakh each to riot victims released by the previous UPA government. President of the society Surjit Singh challenged Sidhu to prove the allegation levelled by her in a letter written to the Prime Minister failing which the riot affected families would gherao her residence in Amritsar. He has also urged the state president of the BJP to hold a probe into the charges at his own level and take action against Sidhu for her misconduct.

Cleanliness drive

A cleanliness drive was organised to observe International Day of People with Disabilities, which falls on Wednesday. A message of cleanliness was given by inmates of Ashirwad and Pehal along with other local NGOs. The drive was initiated by Ashirwad, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Balaji Prem Ashram, VRTC, Ek Prayas, Darpan, Ek Jot, Muskan and Ek Lakshya. Tanvir Singh Dhaliwal, councilor, Ward No. 59, and local councillor Jaswinder Singh Bhola took the initiative on the request of Ashirwad and LIC manager BS Kapoor. They made groups and visited neighborhood colonies and Dugri Main market (Easy Day, PNB, Bansi Vashno Dhaba, Chhatwal Sikh Centre, Reliance Fresh) followed by door-to-door canvassing to keep the surrounding clean. They explained the hazards of using plastic, preventing water wastage, the principle of reduce, reuse and recycle waste segregation. They were holding banners and raised slogans of ‘Saaf Ludhiana, Sunder Ludhiana’, ‘Saaf Ludhiana, Swachh Ludhiana’ and ‘Jall Bachao, Kal Bachao’.
