An awareness programme to mark World Lymphoma Awareness Day, on September 12, is being held at Christian Medical College and Hospital. Survivors of lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system which can develop in the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood or other organs, are coming together on a common platform to spread the word that lymphoma is a cancer which can be cured. For 2015, the theme chosen by the lymphoma coalition is “Lymphoma is a cancer that can’t be ignored”. Also, the Department of Clinical Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation of the CMCH is organising a Lymphoma Survivors’ Meet to spread awareness among people of Punjab. The motto of the meeting is ‘Early detection, accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment’. All patients and their relatives who have been treated with lymphoma are invited to attend the meeting. No registration fees or contribution.
Conference on autism
Dr Ravinder Kala, an autism expert from Mind First, attended a conference on “autism spectrum disorder across the lifespan”, conducted by the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston,USA. The conference focused on comprehensive overview of autism which included genetics, assessment and clinical care. Renowned international speakers discussed neuroimaging in autism and comorbidity of autism with anxiety disorders, ADHD, and bipolar disorders. The treatments targeted the core deficits in autism, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), social skills training and family counselling. Dr Kala said there was a need to develop awareness so that high functioning autistic adults could undergo regular counselling in order to develop skills for good adjustments and social functioning. Dr Kala learnt number of new psychological techniques to work with autism.
Meat shops to remain closed
Police Commissioner Paramraj Singh Umranangal has ordered all the meat shops and slaughter houses to remain closed on Samvatsari Diwas. Using the magisterial powers under Section 144 of the CrPC, the CP imposed a ban on cooking of non-vegetarian food at hotels and dhabas.
Ban orders
District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner Rajat Agarwal has banned the transportation of cows from evening till morning in Ludhiana district under Section 144 of the CrPC. He also ordered that the people having cows should get these registered with the Animal Husbandry Department. These orders will remain in force till November 6.
Comp courses for ex-servicemen
Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Jasbir Singh Boparai, District Sainik Welfare Officer, Ludhiana, said different computer courses had been started at the Sainik Vocational Centre. The wards of ex-servicemen, dependents of ex-servicemen and other children can get admission. The students can get the registration done by September 14. Complaint against Sunny Leone
NGO Raksha Jyoti Foundation has filed a complaint against Sunny Leone for nudity and obscenity in advertisements with the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner. Members of the foundation said such advertisements should be removed from media. — TNS
